Variety & Vineyard - Savagnin is a little known French variety found mainly in the Jura region of Eastern France. It is used predominantly to produce the acclaimed vin jaune, a sherry-like wine known for its longevity. Blended with chardonnay it also forms a major component of other Jura wines such as Côtes de Jura Blanc and L’Etoile.
Savagnin is something of an accidental import to Australia as a result of a wrongful identification by Spanish viticultural authorities who sent the vines to Australia labelled as albarino. It is a late ripening variety bearing small berries that produce a wine high in colour and extract.
Jancis Robinson in her book “Vines, Grapes and Wines’ summarises the variety as ‘very good quality and very good keeping qualities’. Its history in Tasmania is short but it is showing potential as a dry white wine of character and quality.
