Spring News

Dear [FIRSTNAME]

Welcome to our Spring Cellar Club newsletter. We have spoken to our winemaker and vineyard manager for the latest developments on wine and vine progress and put together some other snippets of information we hope you will enjoy. At Kayena Vineyard, we have finally emerged from our winter chill and are enjoying longer days and pleasant sunshine. Budburst has well and truly arrived.

In the winery, a lot of work on blending trials has given shape to a lot of products. As a result of this work, many of the aromatic wines are being blended and readied for bottling. The Devil's Corner Sauvignon Blanc, for example, is currently in its last stages of preparation.

Winery Barrel Filling

The sparkling blends have also been assembled, with inclusions of older reserve wine in the case of the Non Vintage sparklings. Tirage will commence over the coming weeks. As happens at this time each year, the barrels of Pinot Noir destined for the Tamar Ridge label are about to undergo malo-lactic fermentation (MLF). This is a busy time of year. Once through MLF, the wines will have undergone a transformation that will better enable us to understand their characteristics, and give us a clearer view of how the final wine will shape up.

Cane_pruned_Chardonnay_10th_Oct

We have finally finished pruning all varieties which this year took a long four months. Chardonnay is our earliest variety and this spring has been the warmest on record at Kayena, resulting in a much earlier bud burst than average. Sauvignon Blanc is our slowest variety and started bud burst only two weeks ago.

We are looking forward to what is hopefully a drier vintage than 2011. Despite the challenging conditions of last vintage we managed to maintain very high fruit quality without losing too much fruit, so it showed that we can handle whatever challenges may arise.
Cane pruned Pinot We have done some fairly heavy pruning on our older Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with the aim of rejuvenating these vines for the future. This may have the effect of lowering our potential yield on some blocks, though we believe this heavier pruning should greatly reduce our risk of bunch rot. We have several younger blocks of Pinot Noir that should now be getting established enough to produce some high quality fruit.

The upcoming Vintage is always our favourite time of year, despite the increased levels of stress and long hours it brings. Vintage is a complex operation across the vineyard, with numerous varieties, clones and wine styles all being picked at different levels of ripeness and flavour, some by hand and some by machine, some at night and some during the day. It is also a great relief to have the grapes safely tucked away in the winery and away from the birds!

OFF THE PRESS:

September 2011 Matthew Jukes is a well respected wine journalist in the UK and regularly contributes to various publications. His wine list in the Daily Mail Weekend magazine is read by some 4.8 million people in the UK. Jukes described the 2009 Pirie South Pinot Noir as "one of my 100 best Australian wines of 2011 - a captivating, silky smooth, plum-soaked pinot. With a heavenly nose and a perfect palate, this wine shows Tassie is becoming a pinot territory to be reckoned with".

August 2011 One of Australia’s most notable wine writers, James Halliday, releases his “Australian Wine Companion” mid each year. Halliday scored both Tamar Ridge and Pirie Tasmania 5 Red Stars. The Devil’s Corner Riesling, Tamar Ridge NV Cuvee and Pirie Estate Chardonnay each 94 points. We are all really pleased with these results!
